| 4C's of Diamonds - Cut |  | Cut is often considered the most important characteristic of a diamond. Cut gives the diamond its brilliance, those little sparkles of light that catch your eye.

One step below the excellent cut, the ideal cut diamond is highly comparable in sparkle and brilliance. This type of diamond cut is slightly less expensive but is still a magnificently cut gem | | | | | Cut does not refer to the shape of the diamond, but rather the quality of symmetry and the harmony of the sides. Each half of the diamond should be a mirror image of the other.
There are two diamond-cutting styles, brilliant cut and step cut. Brilliant cuts are comprised of triangular and kite-shaped facets while step cuts are comprised of mostly rectangular-shaped facets.
Brilliant-cut diamonds require highly specialized cutting techniques, but the result is well worth it. This complicated cut maximizes fire and brilliance in order to internally reflect the most light back up through the table.
As we mentioned, step-cut diamonds are comprised of rectangular facets. These broad, flat planes create rows that act like mirrors and reflect light back through the table. Since the light is reflected at varying levels, the pavilion on step-cut diamonds is typically longer than that on brilliant-cut diamonds. Because the step-cut diamonds are deeper and the facets are large and open, inclusions are much more obvious with this cut.
Every Mariloff diamond is EGL certified. The cut grade will be clearly stated on the certificate. EGL cut grades, from highest to lowest, are as follows: Excellent Ideal, Ideal, Premium/Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor. | |
